The University of Cambridge’s Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology has returned 39 traditional artifacts to Uganda in a significant act of restitution. These items, including tribal regalia and delicate pottery, were handed over to Uganda on Saturday several years after Ugandan officials launched an effort to reclaim them. Mark Elliott, the museum’s senior curator in anthropology, described the repatriation as a museum-to-museum collaboration stating the artifacts will be loaned to Uganda for an initial three years with the possibility of a permanent loan in the offing. The objects represent a small fraction of the approximately 1,500 ethnographic items from Uganda that Cambridge has owned for a century, many acquired from an Anglican missionary active in Uganda in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Uganda Museum in Kampala will display these artifacts in a temporary exhibition next year.
