Jamieson Greer, the US Trade Representative (USTR), has criticized Nigeria’s import ban on 25 product categories, including beef, poultry, medication, and spirits, saying it hampers American export opportunities. Greer labeled the restrictions one of ten unfair trade practices committed by countries around the world against the US. He also claimed that the ban contributed to lost revenue for US businesses looking to expand into the West African nation. The USTR’s statement coincides with Washington’s renewed push for protectionist policies under President Trump. While Nigeria hasn’t responded, it has previously defended the bans as vital to protecting local industries and conserving foreign reserves.
