The United States Military has deployed about 200 troops and several MQ-9 drones to support Nigeria’s fight against insurgent groups, signaling a renewed security partnership with the Nigerian Armed Forces. Operating from Bauchi airfield, American forces have a non-combat role, focusing on helping Nigerian commanders identify, track, and respond to terrorist threats through a newly established intelligence fusion cell. The deployment fills a strategic gap left after the US vacated a drone base in neighboring Niger in 2024 and comes as extremist violence continues to threaten communities. By strengthening intelligence sharing and training, both countries hope to better detect attacks and contain the evolving insurgency spreading across parts of West Africa.
