US Development Bank Backs African Rare Earth Projects

By Semafor·Edited by Editor TO·

The US International Development Finance Corporation is preparing to support rare earth projects in Africa as Washington seeks alternatives to China-dominated global supply chains. Rare earth elements are critical to advanced technology and defense industries, while China remains the dominant producer. Beijing’s threat last year to restrict exports highlighted the vulnerability of US manufacturers and intensified efforts to secure alternative sources. Africa possesses some of the world’s largest rare earth deposits, but developing them presents substantial challenges. Many prospective projects are located in countries with inadequate infrastructure, driving up costs and making private investors reluctant to commit capital. The DFC says its objective is to help projects reach a less risky stage and attract additional investment. Its involvement could therefore become important in turning Africa’s mineral potential into commercially viable production.
