The State Department has officially designated the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organization, citing ties to Iran and its role in blocking regional peace. The move is widely seen as a diplomatic victory for the UAE, which has long backed the Rapid Support Forces fighting Sudan’s military. But the announcement immediately sparked calls for equivalent pressure on the RSF itself, with Senate Foreign Relations Committee chair Jim Risch urging the administration to consider the same designation for the paramilitary group accused of genocide. Meanwhile, Sudan has hired a Washington lobbying firm to sharpen its influence in the US capital.
