Tensions are rising between the US and South Africa after the US House Foreign Affairs Committee passed the first round of a controversial bill that could sanction South African leaders. The “US-South Africa Bilateral Relations Review Act of 2025” accuses the African National Congress-led government of aligning with US adversaries like Russia, China, and Iran, and being hostile toward Israel and Taiwan. Introduced by Trump ally Rep. Ronny Jackson, the bill also cites alleged targeting of Afrikaners (South Africa’s white minority) and urges a review of Pretoria’s foreign policy, accusing it of undermining US interests. While every Republican on the committee supported the bill, most Democrats opposed it, warning it could harm decades of diplomacy. Meanwhile, South Africa’s government has emphasized continued partnership and diplomacy to navigate the growing geopolitical strain.
