The United States is pushing for its companies to participate in Ethiopian Airlines’ $12.5 billion Bishoftu airport project, underscoring growing competition with China and other global powers for infrastructure opportunities in Africa. The four-runway airport, located about 45 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa, is scheduled for completion in 2030 and aims to establish Ethiopia as a leading aviation hub on the continent. US official Mark Mitchell said involvement could include additional Boeing aircraft equipped with GE Aerospace engines, building on Ethiopian Airlines’ April order for six more Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. Beyond the airport, the US is also seeking closer cooperation with Ethiopia’s Artificial Intelligence Institute to expand exports of American AI technology.
