President Donald Trump has signed a one-year extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), reinstating a lapsed trade program critical to many African economies. The renewal restores duty-free access for over 1,800 products to the US market retroactively from its 2025 expiration through December 2026. However, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer signaled that this is a temporary fix, announcing plans to modernize AGOA this year to better align with “America First” trade priorities and demand more from partner nations. The move comes despite notably strained political relations with a major beneficiary, South Africa, which accounted for nearly half of all AGOA exports last year. This extension provides stability but foreshadows significant changes ahead for the decades-old pact.
