US-South Africa trade talks hit snag

Trade negotiations between South Africa and the United States have hit a snag over Pretoria’s Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) and land redistribution laws. South African International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola revealed that Washington has linked South Africa’s domestic policies to trade discussions and imposed a 30% tariff on imports from the country, citing alleged discrimination against white South Africans. Speaking at the FT Africa Summit in London, Lamola dismissed the allegations and urged that internal reforms not be conflated with trade. The situation is further complicated by the Democratic Alliance—a key pro-business party and member of South Africa’s coalition government—which is now challenging the very BEE laws at the heart of the dispute. This internal political dynamic threatens to upend the fragile governing alliance and adds another layer of tension to an already delicate international dialogue.
