In a significant move for healthcare in Africa, Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk has launched its weight-loss medication, Wegovy, in South Africa. This marks the drug’s first availability in Africa and intensifies Novo Nordisk’s global rivalry with Eli Lilly, which introduced its own drug, Mounjaro, in the country eight months prior. The launch addresses a critical healthcare need in the country, as recent data indicates half of all South African adults live with excess weight or obesity. However, a major barrier to access remains the high cost, with a month’s supply of Mounjaro priced at nearly $200. Novo Nordisk has not disclosed Wegovy’s pricing but signaled expansion plans in Egypt, underscoring Africa’s growing role in the global obesity drug market.
