WHO Reports Recovery of Five Ebola Patients

The World Health Organization has welcomed the recovery of five Ebola patients in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where authorities are battling an outbreak caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain. Unlike the more common Ebola Zaire variant, Bundibugyo has no approved vaccine or treatment and can kill up to half of those infected. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said four patients were set to be discharged on Sunday after another was cleared to leave the hospital earlier, offering a rare positive development amid the crisis. The outbreak, the DRC’s 17th, has already recorded 263 confirmed cases and 42 deaths, while neighboring Uganda has reported nine infections and one death.
