The World Health Organization has warned that the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak has outpaced current response efforts, calling it the country’s largest ever. Consequently, the organization is calling for urgent international funding and operational support to bolster response efforts. As of August 1, the outbreak has generated 3,748 confirmed cases and 1,657 deaths across 49 health zones in five provinces, with 708 recoveries. Approximately 17,000 contacts remain under monitoring, with over 80% followed daily. WHO says additional resources are urgently needed to expand treatment centers, field investigation teams, safe burial operations, and community health services. Although there are currently no approved vaccines or treatments specifically for Bundibugyo Ebola, supportive care improves survival rates. However, clinical trials of experimental treatments and preventive medicines are underway, offering hope for the future.
