The World Health Organization has warned that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo may be spreading faster and farther than initially believed. At least 131 deaths and more than 513 suspected cases have been recorded, but new modeling suggests actual infections could already exceed 1,000 due to significant underreporting. WHO officials say the outbreak has spread beyond Ituri province into South Kivu and Goma, a major eastern city affected by conflict and population displacement. The Bundibugyo strain behind the outbreak has no approved vaccine, complicating containment efforts. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described the scale and speed of the epidemic as deeply concerning, warning that insecurity, weak health systems, and population movement are accelerating transmission risks across Central Africa.
