Men’s sexual and reproductive health challenges are widespread in Africa, yet stigma and limited healthcare access leave many relying on traditional medicine. In South Africa, researchers found that indigenous plant-based remedies play a vital role in addressing conditions such as erectile dysfunction, infertility, and sexually transmitted infections, especially in rural communities. By reviewing studies published between 1996 and 2023, the researchers identified 337 medicinal plants used across seven provinces, with African potato, elephant root, and pawpaw among the most prominent. These remedies not only meet urgent health needs but also reinforce cultural identity. However, as societies modernize, this expertise faces gradual erosion, underscoring the need for documentation, scientific validation, and integration into modern healthcare systems.
