The World Bank and African Development Bank are ramping up Mission 300, their flagship program to expand electricity access across Africa, which is home to roughly 80% of the 570 million people worldwide who lack access to electricity. Since its launch in 2024, the program has provided electricity access to more than 50 million people, with 36 participating countries developing national action plans. This year, the African Development Bank expects to approve projects that will connect up to 15 million additional people, including a $59 million mini-grid initiative in Eritrea. Other efforts include the launch of Zafiri, a $176 million investment platform supporting off-grid energy companies, and the expansion of cross-border electricity trading through regional power pools.
