The World Bank and the Rockefeller Foundation have pledged tens of millions of dollars to speed up Africa’s solar transition, betting that the continent is on the cusp of a clean-energy breakthrough. Although Africa boasts vast solar potential, solar power still accounts for just 2% of electricity generation—far below the global average. That gap is now narrowing as cheaper panels and improved technology fuel a surge in microsolar projects. Nigeria’s import of more than 1,700 megawatts of solar panels last year alone highlights the momentum, enough to meet roughly 5% of national demand. With panel imports across the continent nearly tripling in two years, analysts say Africa’s long-awaited solar takeoff is finally underway.
