South Africa has secured a $1.5 billion loan from the World Bank to upgrade its strained infrastructure and support its shift toward greener energy. Over the past decade, degraded infrastructure, including decaying rail lines, overloaded ports, and power outages, has stifled key industries and hindered economic growth. The loan, announced by the National Treasury, is expected to help resolve some of these infrastructure issues, particularly in the transport and energy sectors. This, in turn, will enable job creation and inclusive economic growth. With favorable terms, including a grace period, the loan will also help to ease debt-service pressures. Meanwhile, the South African government has allocated over $56 billion to addressing infrastructure problems over the next three years.
