Africa is set to secure the lion’s share of a new $100 billion financing package from the World Bank, with 70% earmarked for the continent’s poorest nations. This move comes at a critical time, as traditional foreign aid to the continent is declining. According to preliminary Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development data, foreign aid to the continent fell 1% to $42 billion last year. Meanwhile, analysts expect further reductions as the US scales back funding under President Donald Trump and Europe redirects resources to defense. World Bank officials, however, reaffirmed their strong commitment to Africa, with the loan providing a significant lifeline for development at a time when the continent’s options for foreign assistance are becoming increasingly scarce.
