Despite deep cuts to US foreign aid and other controversial policies, a majority of young Africans believe President Donald Trump’s administration could improve their future, according to the 2026 African Youth Survey. Conducted among 4,901 people aged 18–24 across 16 African countries, the survey found that roughly 58–60% are optimistic about the impact of Trump’s policies. While 46% acknowledge negative impacts from the dismantling of USAID—which slashed aid disbursements by 35% to $7.86 billion—26% view the cuts as forcing African leaders to confront domestic challenges. South Africans remain most skeptical, with 71% urging leaders to stand up to Trump. The shift in sentiment favors African governments willing to pursue pragmatic, transactional relationships with Washington, particularly those with strategically important resources. But for nations that rely on US aid, it is a huge blow. The findings will ultimately reshape diplomatic priorities across the continent.
