Young Filmmakers Lead Guinea’s Push to Revive Cinema
A new generation of filmmakers is working to revive Guinea’s struggling film industry after years of declining production, limited funding, and cinema closures. Once a thriving sector, Guinean cinema now has few regular screening venues, with the Franco-Guinean Cultural Centre serving as Conakry’s only consistent location for film screenings. To arrest the decline, training programs are helping aspiring filmmakers develop skills in screenwriting, directing, editing, and sound production. In addition, creative incubators are providing support for the development and production of projects. However, industry participants warn that training alone cannot guarantee a revival, arguing that sustainable financing, reliable production structures, and stronger distribution networks are essential to keeping emerging talent in the sector and bringing local films to audiences.
