Zambian authorities have charged opposition leader Brian Mundubile with treason following his arrest after weeks of political turmoil. Mundubile, who disputed President Hakainde Hichilema’s re-election, went into hiding after a security raid on a property linked to him left a former cabinet minister dead and several politicians in custody. Authorities said weapons were recovered during the operation and accused Mundubile’s NRPUP of plotting an armed insurgency, an allegation the party rejected. Mundubile and his running mate Makebi Zulu subsequently sought refuge at a United Nations building before being detained after Hichilema pressed the UN to surrender them. In total, 17 others, including Zulu, face the same treason charge. Meanwhile, the opposition was unable to mount a legal challenge against Hichilema’s win after the nation’s courts were sealed on the filing deadline.
