After days of tense negotiations, Zambia’s government and the family of the late former President Edgar Lungu have reached a deal over his funeral arrangements. Lungu, who died almost two weeks ago in South Africa, had reportedly requested that his rival, President Hakainde Hichilema, not attend his funeral. However, a compromise now allows Hichilema to lead a state funeral on June 22. The former president’s body will return to Lusaka this Wednesday and lie in state before being buried at Embassy Park, the official burial ground of former Zambian presidents. Though tensions lingered due to Lungu’s past political rivalry with and public criticisms of Hichilema, both sides have called for unity. The resolution offers closure to Zambians mourning a leader who remained politically vocal even after leaving office.
