Zimbabwe turns to coal to ease energy crisis

Zimbabwe is launching a major $455 million project to tackle its severe electricity shortage, which currently sees half of the national demand go unmet. The state utility ZESA has signed a 15-year deal with India’s Jindal to refurbish ageing units at its largest coal plant, Hwange. This rehabilitation, set to begin in early 2026, aims to add 400 megawatts to the grid within four years—equivalent to a fifth of the country’s present needs. The upgrade follows a previous expansion at Hwange and efforts to bolster the drought-hit Kariba hydropower station. This initiative represents a crucial step toward alleviating the prolonged power outages that have long hindered Zimbabwe’s economy and daily life.
