The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has dismissed Sudan’s case accusing the United Arab Emirates of fueling genocide in Darfur. Sudan claimed the UAE violated the Genocide Convention by arming paramilitary forces. However, the ICJ sided with the UAE, which argued that the court lacks the jurisdiction to rule on the matter. When the UAE joined the Genocide Convention, it entered a reservation to a clause allowing states to sue one another. The UAE’s lawyers cited this to the ICJ, which agreed. Nevertheless, the ICJ expressed deep concern over the escalating humanitarian crisis in Sudan, especially in West Darfur. It also emphasized that, despite the ruling, nations remain accountable for violations of international law.
