Archaeologists working at the ancient city of Apollonia on Libya’s eastern coast have announced a significant cluster of discoveries, including a previously unknown seaside theater and a rare Greek hippodrome unlike any found elsewhere in Cyrenaica or the wider Mediterranean region. The discoveries, made by the French Archaeological Mission in Libya in partnership with Libyan heritage authorities, also include sacred complexes that could reveal new details about the city’s religious traditions and urban development. Located near present-day Susah, Apollonia was one of the principal cities of ancient Cyrenaica and has been the focus of archaeological research since 1976. Researchers believe the latest findings will deepen understanding of the ancient settlement while strengthening Libya’s efforts to preserve its cultural heritage and expand its appeal as a destination for archaeological tourism.
