Sixteen South African cheetahs are carving out a new future in Mozambique’s Panyame Wildlife Conservancy, marking a bold rewilding effort to restore the region’s ecological balance. Translocated in two batches, the cats—selected for their adaptability—have overcome logistical hurdles, from waterlogged airstrips to mid-flight panics, with no fatalities so far. Released gradually into the 210,000-hectare reserve, they’ve already begun hunting and exploring, with some roaming vast distances across the unfenced Zambezi Valley. While no mating has been recorded yet, early interactions hint at promising social dynamics. Funded by The Origins Foundation, this pioneering project offers hope that these apex predators can reclaim their historic niche in the region.
