Five African Nature Destinations Beyond Traditional Safari
Africa has a wealth of natural environments, including forests, deserts, wetlands, and extraordinary geological landscapes. In Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, visitors can trek through ancient rainforest to encounter roughly half the world’s mountain gorilla population, alongside birdwatching and waterfall hikes. Namibia’s Namib-Naukluft National Park delivers dramatic desert scenery, with towering dunes at Sossusvlei and the stark, otherworldly Deadvlei clay pan. Botswana’s Okavango Delta offers a water-based safari experience through mokoro canoes, boats, and game drives, where elephants, hippos, and big cats are among the wildlife visitors can encounter. Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest National Park features a canopy walkway suspended above the rainforest, as well as chimpanzee tracking and extensive hiking trails. Finally, Madagascar’s Tsingy de Bemaraha presents a surreal “forest of stone,” with jagged limestone pinnacles home to rare, endemic lemurs and birds. Together, these destinations highlight the continent’s remarkable ecological range.
