Climbing Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro remains one of Africa’s premier travel experiences, requiring no technical mountaineering skill but demanding solid fitness and preparation. The best climbing seasons are from late June through October and from late December to early March, when weather conditions are generally drier. Trekkers can choose from seven established routes, each offering varying levels of scenery, acclimatization, and difficulty, with the Lemosho and Machame routes among the most popular. Although thousands of climbers reach Uhuru Peak—the mountain’s highest point—each year, altitude sickness remains a serious risk, making proper preparation and gradual acclimatization essential. A typical guided expedition through a reputable operator costs about $1,500 to $2,000. It includes park fees, camping or hut accommodations, guides and rescue services, but excludes tipping for support staff.
