Researchers have identified a new monkey species, Colobus congoensis, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, marking only the fifth new African monkey species discovered in 75 years. Known locally as Likweli, the primate features a glossy black coat, unique skeletal features, long fur, and striking orange-cream facial markings, and is smaller than related Colobus species. Scientists say genetic analysis shows it diverged from its closest known relative, found more than 1,200 kilometers away, some 4 to 5 million years ago. Identification took over a decade, combining field sightings, genetic testing, and anatomical comparisons with museum specimens. Because the species occupies a limited range of roughly 1,700 square kilometers and faces habitat loss and hunting pressure, researchers recommend listing it as Endangered to strengthen conservation efforts.
