US President Donald Trump is set to host the first Africa-focused summit of his second term in Washington, drawing leaders from Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania, and Senegal. Scheduled for July 9–11, the meeting signals renewed US interest in West Africa. The conversations will likely center on the economic opportunities the region offers the US, as well as regional security. The summit comes amid a flurry of diplomatic activity, including a US-brokered ceasefire between DR Congo and Rwanda, finalized just last week at the White House. While a broader US-Africa summit is still on track for September, this early gathering may serve as a strategic move to solidify ties and influence in a rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape. Notably, the leader of Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, is not invited.
