President-elect Donald Trump’s advisors are advocating for a revamped US-Africa policy centered on “deals and deterrence,” with a focus on pro-business strategies, conflict mitigation, and conservative social values. Unlike the Biden administration’s “woke diplomacy,” Trump’s approach may prioritize evangelical Christian interests and roll back pro-LGBT policies, particularly in nations like Uganda. His first term was marked by a dismissive attitude toward African countries. However, it also laid the groundwork for countering China’s influence on the continent. According to his advisors, Trump’s leadership style and focus on business will help America crowd out its competitors on the continent. Despite the optimism among those on the right about US-Africa relations under Trump, experts urge caution, especially since President Joe Biden’s term began on a similar wave of optimism.
