According to Uganda’s military chief Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Kampala has deployed troops to South Sudan’s capital, Juba, to help secure the city amid escalating tensions between President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar. Kainerugaba declared that any move against Kiir would be considered a “declaration of war” against Uganda. The deployment follows growing concerns over the collapse of South Sudan’s fragile 2018 peace deal due to the recent arrest of Machar’s allies. Kiir has accused Machar of plotting a coup, which Machar has denied. South Sudan’s government has not commented on the deployment, but the situation remains volatile.
