Over 40 years after rhinos were wiped out in Uganda due to poaching and political turmoil, conservation efforts at Ziwa Ranch have brought them back in remarkable numbers. Ziwa Ranch, once a cattle farm, now serves as a protected sanctuary where 48 southern white rhinos roam freely—the country’s only population living in the wild. This success stems from round-the-clock protection, careful habitat management, community-driven tourism, and a stress-free environment that encourages breeding. But Ziwa’s success brings a new challenge: space. The rhinos’ remarkable growth means they are fast outgrowing the ranch and will soon need another home. To resolve this, Uganda’s Wildlife Authority plans to relocate 20 rhinos to Ajai Wildlife Reserve by early 2026, aiming to restore the species to national parks once again. According to conservationists, this revival will boost biodiversity and tourism in the country.
