Lagos-born artist John Madu—celebrated for his bold, vibrant style—is making waves at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam with his exhibition Van Gogh x John Madu: Paint Your Path. In just three months, Madu created ten striking large-format works that blended Van Gogh’s motifs with contemporary West African elements, including plastic chairs and Yoruba influences. Drawing inspiration from a childhood surrounded by Van Gogh’s imagery and a father with an eye for beauty, Madu developed a self-taught style infused with East Asian and manga influences. Rejecting the label “African artist,” Madu embraces a global identity, staying rooted in Lagos even as his work travels the world. For Madu, art is a bridge between cultures—and proof that creativity knows no borders.
