West Africa faces an escalating disinformation crisis, with foreign-sponsored propaganda campaigns, particularly by Russia, intensifying on social media. Research from institutions like the Africa Center for Strategic Studies reveals that nearly 60% of these campaigns are sponsored by foreign actors, with most pushing anti-Western narratives. Even though Russia has been running disinformation campaigns in the region since 2018, it intensified its efforts in 2020, shortly before the Wagner group began operating in Mali. Other actors, including China and Qatar, also play roles in the region’s information landscape aimed at establishing a lasting influence in the area. The situation impacts local journalists who face repression and threats under military regimes, forcing many into self-censorship or exile. Experts like Hamadou Tidiane Sy, director of Senegal’s Ejicom, stress that countering disinformation requires public education and media literacy. However, challenges remain as some political authorities leverage disinformation for their own political gain.
