WHO Declares Ebola Outbreak Global Emergency

The World Health Organization has declared the Ebola outbreak affecting the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a global health emergency after infections spread beyond the original outbreak zone. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the determination after consulting with authorities in both countries, citing rising infections and expanding transmission. The agency reported about 246 suspected cases and 80 suspected deaths in eastern Congo’s Ituri province, with additional confirmed cases emerging in Kampala, Uganda’s capital, and Kinshasa, the DRC’s capital. The current outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which no approved vaccines or specific treatments currently exist. To contain transmission and prevent further spread, the Africa CDC is coordinating with regional and international partners.
