WTO’s Okonjo-Iweala Seeks Second Term as DG

Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the current Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), has announced her candidacy for a second term at the helm of the organization. Okonjo-Iweala, who made history as the first African as well as the first female leader of the WTO in 2021, aims to continue addressing unresolved issues from her first tenure. Her current term is set to end in August 2025, and her early bid is seen by some analysts as a strategic move ahead of the US presidential elections in November. African nations have already endorsed her for a second term, but her re-election depends on gaining consensus from all 165 WTO members, a process in which influential countries like the US play a significant role.
