Zambia is edging closer to a historic milestone as its copper sector surges toward annual production of more than one million tons. After reaching a record 890,346 tons last year, officials say stronger operations and new investments are pushing output even higher in 2025. The momentum comes as global copper prices have jumped nearly 50%, briefly topping $13,000 per ton and boosting prospects for major producers like Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Much of the growth is being driven by Canadian mining companies expanding key projects in the Copperbelt and North-Western Province. Upgrades at Kansanshi and Lumwana are increasing processing capacity and stabilizing supply, while the government is already aiming far beyond the milestone with an ambitious plan to triple national output by the early 2030s.
