Marrakech recently buzzed with creative energy as the seventh edition of 1-54, Africa’s premier contemporary art fair, brought together 22 galleries and approximately 70 artists at the iconic La Mamounia hotel. Spanning photography, sculpture, ceramics, and mixed media, the fair showcased talent from across Africa and its diaspora, with growing attendance from Moroccan cities signaling deepening local enthusiasm. Self-taught Moroccan artist Ghizlane Agzenaï opened the exhibition with a striking solo display featuring a six-meter wooden installation titled “The Portal.” From Sara Benabdallah’s striking photographs examining women’s roles in contemporary Morocco to Geoffrey Phiri’s multimedia exploration of copper’s impact on Zambia, the works on view offered a prescient glimpse into the themes shaping African art today.
