Driven by a desire to deepen his connection with Africa, UK-based playwright Femi Elufowoju Jr, at the age of 53, set out on a bold mission: to visit all 54 African countries before turning 60. What began as a realization in Cape Town of how little he knew about Africa evolved into a seven-year odyssey that reshaped his worldview and inspired 54.60 Africa, a theatrical celebration of the continent’s diversity and dignity. Along the way, unforgettable encounters—from the quiet kindness of strangers to the grandeur of African landscapes—challenged stereotypes and sparked fresh creative vision. Told through 11 fictional characters, the production avoids self-centered storytelling, instead spotlighting Africa’s vibrant cultures. It’s a heartfelt, joyful, and powerful reminder that the continent cannot—and should not—be defined by a single story.
