Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed visited Sudan’s de facto ruler and leader of the Sudanese Armed Forces, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, in Port Sudan on Tuesday. This makes him the first foreign leader to visit Abdel Fattah since Sudan became embroiled in civil war in April 2023. Abiy, previously perceived as closer to the RSF, branded his visit as an effort to stabilize Sudan as a destructive, long-running conflict has displaced nearly 10 million people. Abiy’s visit follows an RSF attack near Sudan’s border with Ethiopia and reports of Ethiopian militias entering disputed territories. Many will be hoping that Abiy’s visit delivers sustainable solutions for Sudan’s stability, especially since peace talks mediated by Saudi Arabia and the US last year broke down.
