The struggle for influence in Africa between the US and Russia is evident in the Central African Republic (CAR), where the presence of Russian Wagner mercenaries has sparked tension. After Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin’s 2023 mutiny, CAR officials sought assistance from US-based Bancroft Global Development. This raised concerns among Wagner mercenaries, who have played a significant role in CAR’s security, particularly in its fight against rebels. Despite Bancroft’s involvement, Russian mercenaries remain embedded in CAR, complicating Washington’s push for change. However, Russia’s influence in the region faces challenges after Prigozhin’s death, as the US attempts to regain footing. Meanwhile, the locals pay no mind to foreign power struggles. Instead, they prioritize security over political conflicts.
