Man Accused of Killing Ugandan Olympian Fatally Burned

Ugandan Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei’s alleged killer, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, has died from severe burns sustained during the attack that claimed Cheptegei’s life. Marangach reportedly set Cheptegei, 33, on fire after she returned home from church with her children, resulting in fatal burns to over 75% of her body. She died four days later. Meanwhile, Marangach himself sustained over 41% burns during the assault. As a result, he developed respiratory failure, which led to his death. Cheptegei’s tragic death has drawn attention to Kenya’s domestic violence problem, particularly within its athletic community. Rights groups emphasize the heightened risk female athletes face, especially from men seeking financial gain from their winnings. Cheptegei is the third elite sportswoman to be killed in Kenya since 2021, underscoring the need for stronger measures to combat domestic violence.
