Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has criticized African leaders for lamenting US President Donald Trump’s decision to freeze foreign aid, including the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and USAID. Speaking at the East Africa Region Global Health Security Summit in Mombasa, Kenyatta urged leaders to shift from dependency and instead focus on self-sufficiency. He questioned why African nations should expect US support when they do not contribute to its tax system. Kenyatta stated that African leaders have misallocated the continent’s resources, then emphasized the need to manage the continent’s resources effectively, invest in research, and prepare for future health crises. He highlighted Kenya’s past COVID-19 measures as an example of self-reliance. The summit, which runs until Thursday, aims to enhance regional collaboration in health security by addressing emerging threats like COVID-19 and Mpox.
