Research from Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro region highlights the health benefits of traditional diets rich in plantains, cassava, and fermented banana beverages like mbege. A study published in Nature Medicine found that individuals consuming these heritage foods exhibited reduced inflammation and improved immune responses compared to those on Western diets. The inclusion of mbege, a mildly alcoholic drink made from fermented bananas and millet, further enhanced these effects. Experts warn that urbanization and the adoption of Western eating habits threaten the preservation of these diets, urging immediate documentation and study to maintain their health benefits and cultural significance.
