Taroudant, often dubbed “Little Marrakech,” is experiencing a surge in tourism as travelers seek less crowded alternatives to its more famous counterpart, located three and a half hours to the northeast by car. Taroudant is charming and idyllic, like Marrakech, with honey-colored sandstone walls and vibrant souks. However, it is more tranquil – an attribute Marrakech has no claim to. The town offers much by way of exploration as it is situated close to the Lesser Atlas Mountains, the Sahara Desert, and the Atlantic Ocean. Taroudant also presents an avenue to experience the local Amazigh culture, from meals and teas to steam baths. Its medina, surrounded by ancient, majestic walls, is a Moroccan national cultural heritage monument. However, while the tourism boom boosts the local economy, it also raises concerns about preserving the town’s cultural heritage and managing resources sustainably.
