Egypt has reassured Greece that the sovereignty and sanctity of Saint Catherine’s Monastery remain intact, following a court ruling that sparked fears among Orthodox leaders. According to the court, the monastery, which has existed for over a millennium, does not own the land it occupies. Nevertheless, the court confirmed the monks’ rights to use the monastery and preserve its religious and archaeological significance. In Cairo, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelaaty assured his Greek counterpart that the ruling does not affect the site but preserves its spiritual status. In a televised address following their meeting, Abdelaaty announced that both nations had vowed to safeguard the monastery’s unparalleled legacy. Built in the 6th century at Mount Sinai’s base, Saint Catherine’s Monastery is the oldest inhabited Christian monastery in the world, as well as home to ancient manuscripts and the biblical burning bush.
