Liberia to Hold State Funeral for President Killed in 1980 Coup

Algerian court confirms five-year prison term for author Boualem Sansal.

Forty-five years after Liberia’s 1980 coup, former President William Tolbert and 13 cabinet members executed shortly after the coup will receive symbolic state funerals. Their bodies, never recovered, are believed to have been dumped in a mass grave after swift and brutal trials. President Joseph Boakai views this ceremony as a step toward national healing and reckoning with a violent past marked by dictatorship and civil war. For victims’ families, it is a long-overdue act of remembrance and dignity. The reburial comes amid renewed efforts to address past atrocities, including efforts to establish a special court. As Liberia confronts its history, this solemn event offers closure and a path forward for unity and justice.
