SA Police Commissioner Accuses Minister of Cover-Up in Political Killings Scandal

A political storm is brewing in South Africa after KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu of sabotaging investigations into political killings and organized crime. During a recent briefing, Mkhwanazi claimed the disbandment of the elite Political Killings Task Team was part of a cover-up to protect a powerful criminal syndicate with ties to politicians, senior security officers, and even members of the judiciary. To back his allegations, Mkhwanazi tendered WhatsApp messages involving Minister Mchunu and an accused businessman, Vusimuzi Matlala, which suggest high-level coordination ahead of the task team’s shutdown. Since the disbandment, over 120 key dockets have reportedly gone cold. Members of society are now calling on parliament to investigate Mkhwanazi’s allegations.
