Egypt kicked off its two-day Senate elections on Monday, with over 69 million eligible voters heading to more than 8,000 polling stations nationwide. A total of 424 candidates—183 independents and 241 party nominees—are vying for 100 individual seats, while another 100 will be decided by a nationwide “National List for Egypt.” President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi will fill the final 100 Senate seats, bringing the total to 300. The elections are being monitored by nine international organizations, 59 local civil society groups, and nearly 25,000 accredited media observers. Voting abroad, which spanned 117 countries, concluded earlier. Preliminary results will be announced on August 12, with runoff elections slated for later in the month.
